    Gerald Spencer Pryse was a watercolorist, lithographer, printmaker, and poster designer. He first gained recognition at the Venice International Exhibition in 1907. Spencer Pryse served as a captain and an official war artist during WWI; he drew lithographs straight onto stone in the trenches. He also designed a number of posters during the war, including several published by Frank Pick for the Underground Electric Railway, among which, The Only Road for an Englishman, 1914, was one of his most famous posters. His works were widely exhibited in Britain and abroad.
