    Born in Bangalore, India, Archibald Hartrick went to Edinburgh University, then studied art at the Slade (1884-5) and the Academie Julian, Paris (1885-6). Among his friends in France were Gaugin, Van Gogh and Toulouse Lautrec.

    Back in London, he worked as a magazine illustrator, and was on the staff of The Graphic (1890-3). From 1908, he taught at the Camberwell School of Art and, from 1914, at the Central School of Arts and Crafts.

    A book illustrator and watercolourist, he was a founder member of the Chelsea Arts Club. (Green 1990)
    He married artist Lily Blatherwick.
