    Biography
    Robert Gibbings was born in Cork, Ireland, where he briefly attended medical school. From 1912, he studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, then attended Noel Rooke's classes in wood engraving, a controversial part of the book illustration course at the Central School of Arts and Crafts.

    He founded the Society of Wood Engravers in 1919, then bought the Golden Cockerel Press in 1924 which he ran until 1933; of the 72 titles published, he decorated 19 with his own wood engravings and commissioned illustration from a number of artists including Eric Gill, John Nash and Eric Ravilious.(Green 1990)
