Biography
Attribute Value Biography Born in Braintree, Essex, he studied at the Cambridge School of Art (1919-22) and the Royal College of Art, London (1922-5), where Paul Nash was a tutor and major influence.
He collaborated with his friends Eric Ravilious and Cyril Mahoney on mural designs for Morley College (1928-30).
Bawden became a successful and prolific illustrator and graphic designer, working freelance for a many organisations on posters, advertisements, book illustrations, ceramic decorations, wallpaper and textile designs. He taught graphic design at the Royal College of Art 1930-40 and 1948-53, and was made a Royal Designer for Industry in 1948.
Bawden's work for London Transport also include press advertisements and tiles for the Victoria Line.
A major exhibition of his work was held at the Fine Art Society, London, in 1987. (Green 1990)
