    He was educated in France and studied art at the Slade from 1899-1903 and then at the Central School of Arts and Crafts under Edward Johnston and W R Lethaby.

    A highly noted wood engraver, he was responsible for the revival of this medium, which from 1905 he taught at the Central School along with poster design, composition and book illustration, where from 1930-1946 he was Head of Book Production. Among his students was John Farleigh. He illustrated many of the Artistic Crafts Series of handbooks.
    He was president of the Double Crown Club and chairman of the National Society of Painter. Sculptors and Gravers/Printmakers, and a founder member of the Socioety of Wood Engravers

    His father was also an artist.
