Biography
Attribute Value Biography Pieter Irwin Brown was born in Rotterdam and studied art at the local art school.From the age of 18 Pieter studied at the Royal Academy in Amsterdam for two years. He travelled widely in Europe and Africa working as an artist. When he moved to London he worked for Leigh Breton Studio and set up his own design businees with his partner Rickman Ralph. He designed posters for the London Midland & Scottish and Great Western Railways as well as London County Council Tramways. (Riddell 1996). In the 1930s he travelled again to Indonesia and then Japan and China and produced between 20 and 30 woodblock prints in a Japanese style. He moved to America in 1940 and worked under the name Pieter van Oort.
