    Born in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, Dinkel studied at the local technical college, then at the Royal College of Art, 1921-1925. He won the Owen Jones Travelling Scholarship to study art and architecture in Italy and France.

    He taught at the Royal College of Art from 1925 until 1940, and later became Head of Stourbridge School of Art form 1940-1947. From 1947 until 1961 was head of the School of Design at Edinburgh College of Art.

    Dinkel was very versatile working as a painter, sculptor, and designer and had exhibitions at the Royal Watercolour Society, New English Art Club and at the Royal Academy from 1927 to 1976. His work is represented in a number of public collections including the Tate Gallery.
