Description
This is a geographic style railway map on linen and card with a hard back folder, issued by the District Railway. It is the fourth version of this sixth edition map. The map shows the geographic features of the London area with the District Railway line overprinted with thick red lines, the Metropolitan Railway overprinted in thinner red lines and other railway lines overprinted in blue. Railway company names are printed alongside the lines which they operate, if lines are operated by more than one company the line is printed using two colours, red and blue. On the District Railway the company name is printed in blue and station names are printed in red. Stations are marked as squares and where a station is served by the District or Metropolitan Railways and another railway company, the station is marked by a red and blue square. Extensions on the District Railway are marked by a broken red line, there are no extensions currently under construction, with the extensions between Ealing Common and Sudbury, and from Whitechapel to Southend now open. There is a map insert in the top left hand corner which shows the section between Putney Bridge and Wimbledon, and there is also an overprint announcing the open line to Upminster and Southend. Extensions on other railways are marked by a blue broken line, the Charing Cross, Euston & Hampstead Railway is under construction, as is the Baker Street and Waterloo Railway between Waterloo and Paddington. There is also a new line being built by the North West London Railway from Marble Arch through Kilburn, the GNP&BR is still under construction from Earls Court to Cockfosters, and there is a proposed line by the City & Brixton Railway from Brixton to Borough. The C&SLR is now open to Clapham Common, and is also open as far as Angel Station in the North, with a further extension to King's Cross. The Central London Railway is now complete, as is the Great Western Railway to Park Royal. There are no other extensions shown on this map. Omnibus routes are represented by a line of dots on this map, and tramways are not included. This map shows a change of station name with Putney Bridge becoming Putney Bridge & Hurlingham. Geographical features such as roads, parks and the River Thames are included in detail and printed in various colours, places of interest are marked in red or pink, and Earls Court is highlighted in blue. This map has a black border, which is broken in several places in order to include some stations, and arrows are used to indicate stations which are beyond the area covered by the map. The title is printed at the top of the map with the text 6th Edition printed on the left hand side of the title. There is a reference key at the bottom, the reverse is blank, and there is a compass pointer in the top left hand corner. This map folds into a purple coloured linen folder, which has a list of stations served by the Metropolitan District Railway on the inside and information about through tickets, there is an advert for the District Railway on the back cover and illustrations of Westminster, St Pauls, The Monument, Cleopatras Needle, Richmond and Windsor on the front cover.
