Description | Postcard collected on an architectural study tour of Northern Europe by Frank Pick, Charles Holden and W P N Edwards (Lord Ashfield's secretary). The tour encompassed Sweden, Denmark, Holland and North Germany between 20 June to 7 July 1930. The record of the trip was written by Edwards, based on the observations made by Pick and Holden. The building shown in this postcard is called Bastei and it is located in Cologne, Germany, at the bank of river Rhine. It was designed by architect Wilhelm Riphahn and it opened in 1924. It sustained severe damage during the Second World War, but it was restored by Riphahn in 1958 when it re-opened as a restaurant. |
