Description | This photographic postcard shows the Bank of England and Royal Exchange buildings. Threadneedle Street, which runs between them, is bustling with traffic and pedestrians. A Great Eastern motorbus can be seen in the foreground. There are two horse buses, a motorcar and two horse-drawn delivery vans to the left. The information about the two buildings on the back of the postcard states that the Bank of England was the centre of the world's financial business. It was built in 1788 after designs by Sir J Soane. The Royal Exchange building was opened in 1814. It was the third to be built on the site, the first two having been destroyed by fire. |
