Description | This colour-illustrated postcard shows the main Turbine Hall of the Great Northern, Piccadilly & Brompton Railway (G.N.P&B.R.) Power House. The power station, at Chelsea Creek, was built in 1902–5 and was commonly known as Lots Road. When built it was said to be the largest generating station in the world, with eight massive 5,500 kilowatt turbo generators producing 65,000 horsepower. Although Lots Road was initially built by Charles Yerkes to power the District line, it was powerful enough to run all of the Underground Electric Railways Company of London lines, including the G.N.P&B.R. The power station was also used to run the London United Tramways trams. |
