Description | This Great Northern, Piccadilly & Brompton Railway (G.N.P&B.R.) colour-illustrated postcard shows the interior of a car shed at Lillie Bridge, close to Earl's Court in west London. Several men, probably engineers or maintenance staff, stand next to the trains. The raised section in the roof, known as a clerestory, provided ventilation for the passengers. The G.N.P&B.R. was formed as an amalgamation of several other railway companies that operated the early sections of the Piccadilly and Northern lines. It was one of the three new Tube lines formed by Charles Yerkes known as the Yerkes Tubes. |
