Description | This artwork was commisioned in 1913 by the Underground Group for use in a poster to advertise its services out from central London. To increase revenues, transport companies were encouraging the public to use their services for leisure pursuits and not just to travel to work. The simple style of the painting emphasises the rural calm of Edgware, then a quiet village on the outskirts of London. The artist, Charles Sharland, produced a number of works for the transport companies. |
