Description | Edna Lumb described herself as an 'on-site artist'. She painted machinery, mills, engines, quarries and bridges with meticulous detail and great beauty. Her industrial landscapes focused on the process rather than the objects. Lumb was commissioned to produce a series of on-site paintings during the conversion of the old flower market building in Covent Garden into London's Transport Museum. This painting from the series depicts the installation of the Feltham Tram. The painstaking process involved laying temporary rails on which the tram could be manoeuvred into place. Edna Lumb was born in Leeds. She won a scholarship to Leeds College of Art and began her career as an art teacher before becoming a freelance painter. |
