Description | Photocopy of handwritten letter on letter headed paper from Artist Paula Cox. Cox explains how she was commissioned by the Design Director of 'Art on the Underground' "to paint a picture to celebrate the Ethnic Diversity of London". Cox notes how the painting is a celebration of the Caribbean community 'who arrived in London in the 50s' by celebrating the culture of Street carnival. She chose this subject because of the Caribbean community's link to London Underground as employees; alongside this the subject allowed her to express music and dance in line and colour, which had been a theme in her paintings. She mentions the timely nature of revealing her poster design as it coincided with a series of jazz covers commissioned by BMG RCA records would be released at the same time. |
