What is payroll giving?

Payroll giving is a simple way to make a regular donation to support London Transport Museum (Registered Charity No. 1123122) or other UK registered charities. Simply choose an amount you’d like to donate every month and London Transport Museum will receive a tax-free donation directly from your salary.

Your support makes a difference by helping us to keep preserving our collection. It also enables the delivery of our education and employability programmes for young Londoners.

How does it work?

Payroll giving, also known as workplace giving or Give As You Earn, allows you to give directly from your gross salary. This means that money that would normally be taxable is paid tax free to London Transport Museum.

You decide how much you want to give each pay period and which charity you want to give it to. Your donation is then deducted from your salary before tax. For example, if you opt to donate £10 you only pay £8 if you are a base rate taxpayer or £6 if you pay the higher rate.

You can see how much your pledge will cost using our calculator below.

You can give as much as you like and change or cancel your donation at any time simply by informing your payroll department.

Are you a TfL employee or Pension Fund member?

If you are a TfL employee or Pension Fund member you can select to support London Transport Museum through Transport for London’s GAYE scheme by completing the online form found at My TfL > mybenefits > Give As You Earn – Charitable donations.

Once completed, the form will be sent directly to payroll giving in Action and HR Services Customer Delivery will set up the donation from your salary. The Charites Aid Foundation will forward on donations to London Transport Museum or any other selected charity/charities.

FAQs

  • How does payroll giving work?

Payroll giving allows you to give directly from your gross salary. This means that money that would normally be taxable is paid tax-free to London Transport Museum.

Email us and we’ll make sure that your company operates a scheme that allows you to give to London Transport Museum straight from your pay and we notify your Payroll Department that you would like to set up a regular donation to us in this way.

If your company does not operate the scheme, then we will contact you to let you know and perhaps you might encourage your employer to set this up.

  • Can I give to more than one charity?

Yes, you can donate to as many charities and causes as you like as long as they are registered in the UK.

  • Is there a minimum/maximum donation?

No, there is no upper or lower limit and you can give as little or as much as you like. Use our Payroll giving calculator above to work out the cost to you as an individual for common donation amounts.

  • When will my first donation be deducted?

Your first payroll giving contribution is made on your next pay day. However, if you are signing up towards the end of the month – after your employer’s payroll has been processed your first contribution will be made the following pay day. When donations are taken from your salary they will appear on your payslip.

  • Can I stop giving when I want?

Yes. All you have to do to stop or change your donation is to directly notify your payroll department who will process this on your behalf.

  • What happens to my Payroll Giving donation if I leave my employer?

Your payroll giving donation automatically stops when you leave your job with your current employer. It’s easy to start giving through the scheme again. Simply contact the payroll department at your new workplace.

  • Is there an administration fee?

Yes, a small fee is usually payable. Your employer will use a payroll giving agency to collect and distribute the donations made by you and the payroll giving agencies make a small charge to cover their operating costs.

The good news is that some employers will pay the fee on your behalf so that London Transport Museum receives your full donation. If this is not the case typically 2-4% of your donation will be deducted by the agency charity before they pass the funds to us.

If you are a Transport for London employee or Pension Fund member, TfL pays the 4% administration fee so the full amount goes to the charity.

  • Can I give through my pension?

Yes. If you receive an occupational pension and your pension provider deducts tax through the PAYE system, you are still eligible for the scheme. Simply ask your occupational pension provider to make a donation from your pension before tax has been deducted.

  • What should I do if my employer doesn’t currently have a scheme?

If you aren’t sure if your company has a payroll giving scheme, get in touch with us and we’ll let you know. If they don’t operate a scheme perhaps this is an opportunity to establish payroll giving at your company.
