Description | Underground railway staff cap badge. Nickel-plated and in roundel style, with "8821" inscribed across bar in blue enamel on silver, and "LONDON / TRANSPORT" inscribed in silver on yellow enamel ring. Lugs on reverse, pin missing. This badge was issued to: stationman, stationwomen, porter, railwayman, leading railman, collector, guard, signalman, from 1939 onwards. Each bore a three or four figure number as a means of identification, and to give grades accountability to the public. Early badges had a yellow ring and were nickel-plated (such as this), whilst later badges issued from 1964 onwards, were finished in ochre enamel and chromed. Issued to London Transport Underground station guards between 1939 and 1964. |
