    Text
OUT & ABOUT Country Churches The sun takes the gentle colours from the window and splashes on to the crusader, lying in his stone sleep with the dog at his feet. The carved pews, worn smooth with time, creak in the silence. In the quiet of the afternoon the country churches give back their treasure, achieved with so much pride and reverence. There is the varied architecture of the centuries, stained glass windows, the engraved lettering on wood and stone; there are the yellow brasses with their armoured knights and their stiffly graven angels. The villages in London's country are rich in their churches. by LONDON TRANSPORT The churches shown here are some of the most beautiful and interesting near London. The notes alongside tell you how to get there, the green figures denoting Green Line routes, black figures Country or Central bus routes.
