Description | This photo was taken in the 1980s during the redevelopment of London's docklands. The picture shows Butler's Wharf, at Shad Thames, which is just across the river from St.Karharine's Dock. The buildings were originally warehouses. For centuries this area was one of the busiest in the port. By the late 1960s irreversible decline had begun. During the 1970s, Butlers Wharf was home to artists' studios and artisan workshops. In the 1980s it was redeveloped as apartments and restaurants. The photo shows the renovated buildings. |
