Description | A four-wheeled horse-drawn 'growler' is being loaded with parcels at the London office of Kelly's Directories on the Strand. A similar vehicle waits its turn. 'Growlers', so-called because of the noise they made on the cobbled streets, were still widely used after the First World War. Kelly's Directories listed local businesses, charities and landed gentry, by town or large village. The working classes were not represented. The signs on the building suggest that the directories had an international scope. |
