Description | This colour-illustrated postcard shows one of the platforms at Piccadilly Circus station on the Great Northern, Piccadilly and Brompton Railway. The view includes an Underground train with gate ends. These were operated by the gatemen to allow the passengers on and off the train at stations. The station name is shown in the wall tiles, with a geometric-pattern frieze running above and below. This design was typical of stations on lines operated by Charles Yerkes, which included the Baker Street & Waterloo Railway and the Charing Cross, Euston and Hampstead Railway. All three lines were commonly known as the Yerkes Tubes. |
