Leaflet; Shelter in Underground Stations, issued by London Transport, February 1941

Main details

Main details for this item.
Reference number

Description
As soon as the Blitz started, thousands of Londoners bought platform tickets and took to the Underground for shelter. Although this was not officially encouraged at first, London Transport soon recognised the need to regulate the system in order to prevent overcrowding. Rules and regulations were put in place and special shelter admission tickets were introduced. This leaflet outlines some of the new safety procedures. A crossword puzzle was printed overleaf. The solution was posted on the shelterers' noticeboard a fortnight later.

    Text
Underground stations were not built for shelter. They are part of a railway system. Please help to keep the railway working properly by observing the following rules:
1 When you arrive at a station, have your yellow or blue ticket ready for the collector
2 The evening rush hour goes on till 6.30 p.m. Wait till it is over before coming to shelter
3 The morning rush starts at 7 a.m. Leave before then if you can. Keep behind the 4 foot line by 6.15 a.m.
4 Don't stand about in groups, particularly upon platforms...
8 Your co-operation with railway officials and wardens wil help to keep the railway working in a proper manner
There is a crossword puzzle overleaf. The solution will appear upon the shelterers' notice board in a fortnight's time
