Event information

There are many tunnels in London’s Underground system – but one of them is particularly fascinating: The Thames Tunnel.

Opened in 1843, it was was the world’s first tunnel under a river. It went through many iterations, from hosting Victorian amusement fairs, to being part of the East London Line, and finally, the London Overground (even though at 75 feet deep, it is quite the opposite of over ground!)

Explore the tunnel’s history in our Digging Deeper gallery, then meet the Brunel Museum’s Director, Katherine McAlpine, to hear more about the Brunel family’s extraordinary engineering achievements, and test your knowledge in a live quiz as you sip a drink at our Lower Deck bar.
