Turning children’s enthusiasm for transport into a career in industry
London Transport Museum (LTM) is working with industry to turn childhood enthusiasm into adult achievement through Enjoyment to Employment. This formative programme reaches children and young people at key points throughout their learning and development.
London is enjoying a transport engineering boom. Growth in this sector is predicted to increase as the city continues to expand. But with an ageing workforce, competition to recruit and retain staff is acute. The report Engineering UK 2016 The State of Engineering states that in the next three years over half of all businesses expect to encounter difficulties in recruiting science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) skilled staff.
London Transport Museum is building an industry coalition that works together, through the Museum, to deliver a long-term solution to the most serious problem facing transport in the UK – a lack of engineers.
At the Museum we see the excitement and enthusiasm of hundreds of children every day as they explore our collection, dress up as engineers and drivers and fix and clean the vehicles in our All Aboard Gallery. We aim to harness that enthusiasm and turn it into a fulfilling career.
Uniquely placed to act as a bridge linking industry with children and young people the Museum works with our Enjoyment to Employment coalition partners to deliver the following programmes:
Learning as a family (ages 0-12)
12,500 children and 6,250 parents take part annually in interactive and immersive activities and workshops that fire children’s imaginations and bring transport to life. The activities take place at the Museum during school holidays. Employees from our industry partners have the opportunity to be trained as Family Volunteers helping to tell stories and lead craft activities that enable families to learn collaboratively.
Schools (ages 3-14)
Our collection brings real-world applications of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects to life. Some 19,000 school children each year take part in a range of interactive sessions in class-groups exploring science, art, problem-solving and literacy at the Museum. All our sessions are delivered by trained Museum professionals who expertly draw together transport, the arts and the national curriculum.
Route into Work (ages 16- 25)
Young people who are not in employment build and develop confidence, presentation skills and understanding of work to take their first step on the career ladder. The Museum gives at least 100 young people a year the opportunity to develop key employability skills and to present what they have learned to an employer in the transport industry with live job vacancies.
Enjoyment to Employment is a collective response looking beyond the short-term to secure the future of the transport industry and we are very grateful to our partners for their support.
