Description
Robin Mason designed this poster in 1993. It was commissioned by London Underground to encourage people to use the riverside more for leisure and recreation. It shows the Embankment Gardens on the North bank of the Thames in the foreground. Across the river is the Royal Festival Hall, part of the South Bank Centre. Prominent on the northern bank is the obelisk, Cleopatra's Needle, which stands just by Embankment Gardens. This ancient Egyptian obelisk is older than London. The hieroglyphics inscribed on the monument are not reproduced; instead fishes, trees and hearts, symbols of love and nature, decorate the object. A classical column in the foreground works as an echo of Cleopatra's needle. Here too nature is praised: a sunflower has been 'put on a pedestal'.
