Description
This vibrant Underground poster, designed by Ernest Michael Dinkel, promotes travel to London's West End. In the foreground, people of all ages are silhouetted against the bright lights of Piccadilly. The bronze monument in the centre was built in 1893 to commemorate the philanthropic works of Anthony Ashley Cooper, the 7th Earl of Shaftesbury. The archer was intended to be Anteros, the God of Selfless Love, although it is sometimes given the title 'The Angel of Christian Charity' and is more commonly known by Londoners as Eros. The popular sculpture became a City icon. It was removed temporarily in the late 1920s for the development of Piccadilly's new Underground station and was greatly missed by the public. The Underground group published this poster in 1931, just after the statue's return to the centre of London's West End.
