Item content Attribute Value Text Building: Sabloniere and Provence Hotel (partially obscured).Building: N. Whitehouse.Building: Ryder House Millinery Establishment (partially obscured).Annotation LEICESTER SQUARE: THE NORTH-EAST CORNER, 1874.
This photograph shows the junction of Leicester Place with Cranbourn St. On the north side of the latter thoroughfare appears the property that was demolished to make way for Daly's Theatre. Until the early part of the last century Cranbourn St was merely an alley and was known as Cranbourn Alley.
THE HUNTER BUST: This is by T Woolner. Hunter resided in the Square, in a house that adjoined that of Hogarth. There is an Underground connection with the great surgeon and scientist by reason of Earl's Court Station taking name from Hunter's "country" seat of Earl's Court. It will be observed that the photograph shows the Square enclosed by a wooden hoarding; the now existing railings were not erected until some little time after the opening of the Square.
