    HOLBORN BARS, LOOKING EAST, 1923.

Showing, right, the new Prudential Building (on site of Furnival's Inn and Ridler's Hotel), by Sir Alfred and Paul Waterhouse, 1897-1901 - the Brooke St section, by Sir Alfred, was built in 1879; and Gamage's buildings; and left, Buchanan's building, on site of the Black Swan Distillery. The memorial of the Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) in the foreground was erected 1922, from designs by Alfred Toft. Originally it was disfigured by an arc lamp standard immediately in front of it - the writer took the initiative in having this removed.
