AS IT IS: ST MARY WOOLNOTH IN 1923. / Is it necessary? / Photograph (taken June, 1923) by Topical Press. Underground copyright. / THE BANK STATION OF THE C&SLR. / The original proposition of the C&SLR was to purchase the ground site of the church, and for this they offered to pay a sum sufficient to build half-a-dozen new churches in the suburbs. This offer was declined. In building the station beneath the church, it was necessary to remove the foundations of the edifice and to replace them by steel girders, upon a framework of which the church is now supported. The booking hall is directly under the western end of the church.
