Description | Principal front of the church of St Mary Woolnoth, at the corner of King William Street and Lombard Street, facing west, with entrances to Bank Underground station (Northern line) at either side, indicated by long roundel "Underground" signs curving above the railings enclosing the church, on each side of the main gates, and smaller signs identifying the station and line. Several people are crossing the intersection. There is a rear three-quarter offside view of B-type bus, and a side view of a stationary automobile. |

Underground copyright. / THE BANK STATION OF THE C&SLR. / The original proposition of the C&SLR was to purchase the ground site of the church, and for this they offered to pay a sum sufficient to build half-a-dozen new churches in the suburbs. This offer was declined. In building the station beneath the church, it was necessary to remove the foundations of the edifice and to replace them by steel girders, upon a framework of which the church is now supported.
