    Annotation
HOLBORN CIRCUS: THE SOUTH SIDE, BY THAVIES INN, 1874; SHOWING THIS SECTION SHORTLY AFTER THE CIRCUS HAD BEEN FORMED IN CONNECTION WITH THE HOLBORN VALLEY IMPROVEMENT.

The Prince Consort Memorial had just been erected. It was designed by Charles Bacon, who executed the statue of the Prince and the figures of History and Truth, and the rest of the bronze work. The statue was presented by an anonymous donor, and the pedestal was provided by the Corporation. The Prince Consort is shown in Field Marshal's uniform, committing a grave breach of military etiquette - SALUTING BY RAISING HIS COCKED HAT!

Observe WILLING's hoarding and its artistic posters of the Dore Gallery, the GER, the "Echo" etc. The "Echo" at this time was owned by Baron Grant, who laid out Leicester Square and presented that garden to the public. In 1876 the paper was bought by Passmore Edwards, who made a great success of it. It was the first London halfpenny paper.
