Description | An excavation of a cut-and-cover tunnel down the middle of Craven Hill, Paddington, during the construction of the Metropolitan Railway's Kensington extension. The enormous disruption to pedestrians and householders caused by this method of construction is very clear; access to the houses on the left seems to be by stepping stones onto the roadway, which itself is a sea of mud. On the extreme right of the photograph is a waterman, with a yoke over his shoulders, and a bucket in each hand. |
