Description | This photo shows the entrance to Euston Square Underground station on the corner of Gower Street. An identical entrance was built opposite this on the corner with George Street (now North Gower Street). The station had been opened by the Metropolitan Railway as Gower Street in 1863. It was renamed Euston Square in 1909. Euston Road was widened in the late 1920s to cope with increased motor traffic. The station had to be reconstructed and two new entrances were built between 1929 and 1931. A policeman directing traffic in the road in front of the station, can also be seen in this photo. At that time, traffic lights were still being developed. The first experimental automatic lights were tried in Wolverhampton in 1927. |
