Description | Work on the construction of the Metropolitan District Railway (MDR) at the Thames Embankment. A number of men can be seen in the cut-and-cover trench in the foreground, together with horses and carts loaded with spoil; the stone/brick retaining walls of the trench are already in place. On the right, a navvy leads two horses pulling a train of loaded wagons along what appears to be a temporary railway. A steam navvy stands at the top of the trench, midground centre, with Big Ben and the Palace of Westminster in the background. |
