    Harold F Hutchison's first job was in 1922 as a trainee executive with Unilever. He later worked in their advertising department. In 1928 he became copy and production editor of a London advertising agency. In 1934 he returned to Unilever where he became the copy production executive. He joined London Transport as publicity officer in 1947 and retired in 1966. In 1951 he was appointed chairman of the Design and Industries Association. As well as commissioning poster artists Hutchison re-designed the Underground map himself, although his design was not popular and did not last long. In addition to his work for London Transport Harold Hutchison also wrote a number of historical books.
