    Maurice Grieffenhagen was born in London and studied at Royal Academy Schools where he won the Armitage medal and the Cartoon Medal.

    He became a well known magazine and book illustrator, contributing to the Illustrated London News, The Pall Mall Magazine, The Sketch and The Sphere amongst other magazines of the period.

    Greiffenhagen is particularly remembered for his illustrations of the works of H. Rider Haggard. After 1900 he concentrated increasingly on portrait painting and he also produced poster designs.

    From 1906 to 1929 he was head of the Life Department of Glasgow School of Art.
