    Born in Pontefract, Yorkshire, Charles Pears moved to London in 1897 and became a theatrical caricaturist on Pick-Me-Up (1898-1902). He had a passion for sailing and the sea and is best known for his marine paintings. He was a founder member of the Society of Naval Artists, now the Royal Society of Marine Artists.

    During both World Wars he was an Official Naval War Artist and exhibited at a number of venues, including a number of times at the Royal Academy. His work is held by the NMM and the IWM.

    He became a prolific poster artist designing posters for not only London Transport but also the Metropolitan Railway, Southern Railway, London Midland and Scottish Railway, London and North Eastern Railway, Great Western Railway and the Empire Marketing Board.

    He also illustrated Alice in Wonderland and wrote and illustrated several books with a maritime theme. He exhibited at the RA, Fine Art Society and the ROI. He later lived in Cornwall.
