    Mary Kessell was born in London, and studied at Clapham School of Art from 1935-37 and at the Central School of Arts And Crafts, London from 1937-9.

    In 1945 as an official war artist, she worked in Germany, visiting Belsen and Berlin. She lectured in drawing at the London School of Printing from 1957.

    In 1952 she designed a poster for Shell. She designed murals for the Old Westminster Hospital and Imperial Chemical House, Millbank. She was a designer and book illustrator, and was married to the poster designer, Tom Eckersley.

    Her work is now held by the Imperial War Museum and the Tate Gallery.
