    Richard Kelly was the son of the artist Robert George Talbot Kelly. He was educated at Rugby School and the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. His daughter is the artist Chloe Elizabeth Talbot Kelly.

    In 1917 he was wounded whilst serving in the Royal Artillery (1915-29) and became a camouflage instructor. A painter of birds in water-colour, he exhibited at the Royal Academy, RI to which he was elected in 1924, Paris Salon and in the provinces. His published works include "The Way of Birds" 1937 and "Bird Life And The Painter". He taught art at Rugby School. He designed a poster for British Rail.

    In 1951 he was the design consultant for the Pavilion of Natural Science at the Festival Of Britain. In 1964, he was a founder-member of the Society of Wildlife Artists. After his retirement in 1966 he illustrated books for Puffin Books.
