    Biography
Born in Lowton, Lancashire, Tom Eckersley studied at the Salford School Of Art (1930-4). Together with his college friend Eric Lombers he moved to London where they worked. In 1935, they were recommended by their former tutor to Frank Pick. They specialised in poster design and quickly gained a high reputation producing work for many important clients, including Shell, The General Post Office and the BBC. The partnership was brought to an end by the outbreak of the 2nd World War. During the war Eckersley worked as a cartographer in the RAF and produced a series of "War Effort" posters. He was head of the Graphic Design Department at the London College Of Printing from 1958-1977, and became a Royal Designer for Industry in 1963. Eckersley married the artist Mary Kessell who also designed a poster for London Transport. His last poster for London transport was commissioned by the London Transport Museum in 1995.
