    Biography
Born Lilian Welch in Surbiton, Surrey, she trained at Kingston School of Art and the Royal College of Art.

The career in poster design she had hoped for was frustrated by the Depression years and she became a designer-embroiderer specialising in hand-and- machine-stitched appliqu. (Green 1990)

Dring sent an ambitious design for a tripple poster unsolicited to Frank Pick. This showed a modern Mercury, messenger of the gods, with the London Transport symbol as his heart, Underground lines as his arteries, Broadcasting House as his mouth, the National Gallery as his eyes, the Albert Hall as his ears and Tower Bridge as his throat. Frank Pick told her he was impressed but 'dared not' use the image for a poster because of the cost.
