    Born in Port Seton, Scotland, the son and grandson of fishermen, John Bellany studied at the Edinburgh College of Art (1960-5) and the Royal College of Art (1965-8) under Carel Weight and Peter de Francia.

    He has taught painting at various colleges of art, and was Head of the Faculty of Painting at Croydon College 1973-8.

    A major retrospective exhibition of Bellany's work was held in 1986 by the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh, later shown at the Serpentine Gallery, London. In 1991 he was made an RA. His work is held in the Tate Gallery, National Museums of Scotland, Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Tate Gallery.
