    Born in the East End of London, the ninth of a butcher's ten children, Mabel Lucie Attwell studied at the Regent Street Art School and at Heatherley's but completed neither course.

    Starting out as an illustrator of children's books, she was equally successful as a postcard designer for Valentine's of Dundee, for whom she produced work from 1911 until the end of her life. A contributor to annuals and gift books, she published Lucie Attwell's Children's Annual from 1992 to 1957.

    She also designed advertisements, posters, calendars, figurines and wall plaques. In addition to her work for the Underground Group she also designed advertising material for Erasmic, Swan pens and other organisations.
