Travel back to a time when ladies wore bonnets and men in top hats rode through the City of London in horse drawn vehicles. Discover the story of Victorian London by taking the ‘time machine’ lift up to the 19th Century London gallery to explore the history of the river, steam and what the city was like before buses and the Underground.
Week 1
Storytelling - Monty makes his way to London
Dates: Monday 2 to Friday 6 April 2012 & Monday 9 to Friday 13 April 2012
Time: 11:00 and 13:30
Meet a character from the past as they tell the story of Monty the Mole and his adventures in London. Characters include – A Victorian lady traveling on the Omnibus, Dermot Fitzpatrick hard at work with his spade and hand tool digging the tunnel for Central London Railways, a Gateman working on the first Electric tube and the Museum’s favourite Fireman.
Craft workshop: Tip Top Hats and Bonnets

Check out the gorgeous bonnet on the elegant lady passenger in the Museum’s Omnibus and the top hat of her travelling companion reading the paper. The horse drawn tram and bus drivers even wore top hats as part of their uniform. Design your own to take home, once created run back up to the 19th Century gallery to compare. Suitable for ages 5+

Tickets were a Victorian transport innovation. Families will have the opportunity to handle cash bags and license badges from the Museum’s collection at the ‘Tickets Please’ handling table and then make their own cash bags and license badges to take home. Suitable for ages 5+

Gallery Activity: ‘Jigsaw Puzzle Hunt‘

Learn fun facts about Victorian transport and piece by piece build your own mini jigsaw that you can take home. What is the mystery jigsaw picture? You'll only know if you come along and take part. This activity is located in the London in the 19th Century Gallery on Level 2. Suitable for ages 5+
Craft workshop :‘ Crawl into the Past’

Come back in time and experience a world of fun in making your own Victorian tickets choosing a destination of your choice to any place in London through the magic time tunnel. This activity is located in the Education Room on Level 1. Suitable for ages 5+
Craft workshop: ‘Puppet Madness!’
Dates: Monday 9 April to Friday 13 April 2012
Time: 12:00-15:00
Victorian children loved to play with puppets. Come and create your own puppet ticket inspectors and take them away for a mini show at home. This activity is located in the Education Room on Level 1. Suitable for ages 5+
