Signs and the City
Date: Tuesday 20 September 2011
Time: 18:30 - 20:00
How do you know where you’re going? How do you know when you’ve arrived? Signs are an often overlooked design feature but they play a vital role in our lives. Discover the secrets of signs during a three part talk on Tuesday 20 September at London Transport Museum.

Claire Dobbin, the Museum’s senior curator will explore the relationship between the design heritage of the Tube map and the iconic ‘roundel’ – one of the most enduring brand logos in the world. Jerry Hill, from Transport for London’s (TfL) Sign and Wayfinding Design Unit will illustrate plans for the direction of the millions of extra visitors to London in 2012. And designer Alice Moloney – whose signage design work features in the Museum’s new exhibition Sense and the City: smart, connected and on the move - will talk about her way-finding system for pedestrians, which is inspired by the use of signs in the Greek town of Chora and encourages playful exploration of Hackney.
Examples of the new signs are on display at various London Design Festival venues including design junction ,the Victoria & Albert Museum and Tent. London Transport Museum also has a stand at Tent showcasing their new collaboration project with the furniture designer Squint.
