Creating a London Icon
Date: Monday 13 June 2011
Time: 18:30 – 21:00
The New Bus for London reinstates the much-loved hop on, hop off platform, introducing a third door and a second staircase making it quicker and easier for passengers to board. With a sleek asymmetrical front window and a panel of glass wrapping around the entire bus the passenger will experience even more natural light and extended views of London.

Discover the inspiration behind the design of London’s newest icon, and the process and challenges of creating such a design, in a talk by one its key designers. Join Stuart Wood, of Heatherwick Studio, to find out more about creating London’s first specially commissioned bus in over 50 years.
Established in 1994, Heatherwick Studio is internationally recognized for its work in fields as diverse as architecture, urban infrastructure and design. Projects include the award winning UK Pavilion at Shanghai Expo 2010, the East Beach Café in Littlehampton, Pacific Place, a shopping complex, in Hong Kong, a biomass-fuelled Power Station on the banks of the River Tees, and a Monastery in the South of England. Working alongside specialist bus manufacturer, Wrightbus, the external design of the New Bus for London has been developed to reflect the functional requirements of the vehicle.
This event will include speech-to-text transcription, which gives access to talks and discussions for deaf, deafened and hard of hearing people who are comfortable reading English.
