Poster Art and the River Thames
Date: Saturday 21 May 2011
Time: 15:00 (talk lasts approximately one hour)
Senior Curator, Claire Dobbin, will give an illustrated talk about how the River Thames has featured in over a century of London Transport posters.
The River has always offered Londoners a variety of day trip opportunities. The boat race and regattas, as well as the river's more tranquil reaches and historic sites, have been popular with poster artists for over 100 years. In the first half of the 20th century, posters also presented the river as a bustling port, celebrating its historic importance as an artery and hive of industry and commerce. More recently, posters depicting the South Bank have promoted the Thames as a site for culture and entertainment.
There will also be the opportunity to see an exhibition featuring the top entries to the Serco Prize for Illustration, which this year takes the theme of the River Thames. The exhibition displays over 50 artworks, all showing the River Thames as an exciting destination for Londoners and visitors alike. It has been organised in partnership with the Association of Illustrators.
