Work Experience
Work Experience at London Transport Museum is closed for 2013. We are not accepting any further applications for this year. Applications will begin in October 2013 for placement in 2014; check back with us for more information on dates and how to apply then.
As part of London Transport Museum’s commitment to increase young people’s skills for employment, we are proud to offer Work Experience placements to those with an open mind and an interest in learning how a museum operates.
The placement will take place predominantly in the museum galleries with a strong focus on customer service. You’ll be working with our excellent Front of House team helping the Museum maintain a high standard of customer service.
We have spaces available at set times during the year. Placements are limited to 10 students per calendar year; unfortunately we are not able to accept all students who apply due to high demand.
Once the application period closes you will be contacted within two weeks by our Work Experience Coordinator to inform you of the result of your application.
Length of placement
Placements are organised to coincide with school term dates and run for either 1 or 2 weeks.

Jodie Cross, Work Experience (2 Weeks September 2012)
"My time spent here at the London Transport Museum has flown by. I have enjoyed every single day I have spent here, it has been a great 2 weeks of work experience.
I felt welcome from day 1, everyone is just so polite, nice and great to talk and work with. Each day, I have been involved in lots of different roles and activities in the museum. I think I have played every single work role in the museum from Customer Services to the Security and Facilities.
At the London Transport Museum I was able to improve my social and working skills through the different jobs I was assigned to do. It also made it better as the work was fun to do and I was able to do it myself without watching an adult do it instead.
The people here at the museum were lovely and easy to talk to; I would definitely recommend anyone to do any kind of volunteering work here. I have learnt many new skills, and even more knowledge about transport and customer service.
I’m very disappointed to be leaving such a warm work place as I feel that I have grown closer to a lot of staff who work here, everyone here has made my work experience one to remember."
Ryan Ware, Work Experience (2 weeks July 2012)
“My time at this brilliant museum has just flown. When it goes fast, you know you’ve enjoyed yourself and it’s been a great 2 weeks. It’s been great to meet some amazing people and see what they do on their day to day basis at the museum. Everyone’s very friendly at the Museum and that makes it much easier when settling in on your first couple of days.
It’s been great to see what all the different departments deal with at LTM and see what’s going on behind the scenes at the Museum. The museum’s work experience programme is great and I think it’s just perfect as it is.
There is always something for you to be doing and you are never twiddling your thumbs or anything like that. There is always something enjoyable to be doing, whether it is with the Customer Service Staff, with the Facilities Department, or with the Museum Technicians. It’s great to be given these opportunities.
It was very interesting to see how a museum is run, so my opinion is that the London Transport Museum’s Work Experience programme is worthwhile and should definitely be tried by other students who are looking for work experience placements.
It is a shame to say goodbye to all the people I’ve met but I’m sure we’ll meet again, as this is an amazing Museum.”
Adele Spelman, Work Experience (2 weeks July 2012)
"During my time of only two weeks at London Transport Museum I have had the opportunity to try working in many areas of the museum. This has given me an insight into many different areas and how each one functions, whether by shadowing the MTA’s or helping out in the shop and gallery.
Even though there were some areas which I did not enjoy as much as others it was still an excellent experience which helped me to identify what I was interested in and an effort was made to ensure that most of my time here was spent in areas which I enjoyed. I never found myself bored or at a loose end while working here and everyone tried really hard to ensure I had good and interesting role to play in every department."
Martin Battey, Work Experience (2 weeks July 2012)
"Working at London Transport Museum has been one of the most enjoyable and useful experiences of my life. All of the staff welcomed me into the community, being friendly and approachable, as well as offering lots of support and guidance.
I chose to work at LTM, as I wanted to gain lots of experience in a busy place of work, be trusted and have an opportunity to make a difference and interact with the general public (rather than just sweeping the floor!).
During my time here, I feel I have gained many valuable skills, which will help me in the future, and give me an edge over others when applying for sixth form and university. It has been great to experience all elements of the work, from working on the information desk, to guiding customers in the gallery.
Everyone ensured that I had a good time, giving me a chance to decide what areas I wanted to do more in and placing a great deal of trust in me, allowing me to work with children and assist in schools’ sessions and letting me serve customers in the shop.
I have enjoyed my experience so much that I am hoping to return during the summer to volunteer. It will be a shame to leave the museum, and the staff who I have become good friends with, although hopefully not for too long!"

Finnian Blythe, Work Experience Student
“My time at London Transport Museum has gone fast; I have thoroughly enjoyed every day. From the day of my interview, I have felt welcome by an exceptionally warm working environment. Each day has been packed, from shadowing in Customer Services to helping with school sessions.
One of the things I really looked for when choosing my work experience was trust in me from the organisation (in other words I didn’t want to spend my week making teas and doing the photocopying!).
At LTM I was able to improve my skills through having that extra independence and not just observing an adult but doing it myself. Any ‘office job’ which I previously may have thought of as boring was always fun as there were always lots of lovely people to talk to, while of course ensuring you did the work!
I have learnt heaps to give me an edge when applying for university. But I’m sad to leave behind a lot of people who I feel I’ve grown closer to, and who have really made this week one to remember.”
