Volunteering

Volunteering is a great way to develop skills and give back to the community. Whether you are volunteering to keep busy, learn new skills or to meet new people London Transport Museum is a great place to be.

Volunteers make a huge contribution to London Transport Museum. Give some of your time and you can gain so much in return:

  • Develop transferable skills towards your own career development… at any age!
  • Work with friendly and supportive people
  • Experience at London Transport Museum makes a great addition to any CV

Regular Volunteers meet visitors, provide Depot tours, object handling, help with cataloguing, help in the library or support conservation projects. With over 9000 hours donated in the last year the Museum depends heavily on the generosity of our regular volunteers. Thank you!

  • When? When you can! We will talk to you about what you can offer, and find volunteering tasks that suit your schedule.
  • How long for? No fixed period, but it may be linked to the duration of a museum project you support (some of our regular volunteers have supported us for years). We agree the hours you come in when you start, and keep checking with you that they are still suitable.
  • Who for? Anyone, but regular volunteers often have a real love of our collection and London transport history. Many of the London Transport Museum Friends are regular volunteers, but volunteering is open to all. Ideal if you have spare time and want to give some of it to a good cause in a sociable environment.

    Nohman Younis, Project Volunteer

"I’m Nohman Younis, I’m 17 years old. I never went to museums before I came to the Transport Museum on a skills for employment programme called ‘Routes into Work’. It was just three days, but I learned so much and really enjoyed exploring the galleries and thinking about my skills.

I then tried to get on an apprenticeship but wasn’t picked. But the Museum got in touch and I joined the volunteer team for the FUSE festival project in 2010. In two months I volunteered for over 50 hours and helped run the LTM workshops at the FUSE festival in Kensington Gardens.

It was a great experience, and all along the staff at the Museum made me feel really welcome and listened to. I got my CV together for the first time after the project, and I tried again for an apprenticeship. I’m now working and learning as an apprentice with Telent, a TfL supplier. I don’t think any of this would have happened without me becoming a museum volunteer.”

    Bradley Sainsbury, Regular Volunteer

“I came to the Museum about 2 years ago on work experience and enjoyed it so much that I returned as a volunteer! I usually come up during my summer holidays and breaks, not every day but maybe once or twice a week.

You can do lots of different things as a volunteer, but I don’t like sitting still so I usually work with visitors doing object handling sessions in the galleries.

Volunteering here is like being part of one big family, it is so welcoming and everyone is happy to help. Also the Museum put me forward for the London Volunteers in Museums Award and I was awarded with a highly commended in the Youth Award category.

If you’re into transport or if you would like to meet interesting and friendly people, LTM are the way to go.”
