Conservation and fundraising
London Transport Museum Friends raised £700,000 towards the Museum redevelopment. Their fundraising activity has financed numerous conservation and restoration projects, including the 1938 Tube stock train and the 1931 LT-type 'Scooter' single-deck bus. They have also enabled the installation of rolling stacks at the Museum Depot at Acton to allow vulnerable library materials and ephemera to be stored safely in appropriate environmental conditions.
Most recently the Friends received a Project Planning Grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to investigate the feasibility of restoring four of the Museum's Q-stock District Line cars dating from the 1920s and 1930s to operational condition. London Transport Museum and the Friends have submitted a bid to HLF for a grant towards the costs of restoration of three of the four carriages.
In addition to raising funds, the Friends also organize meetings, visits and other special events, and publish a regular and informative Friends newsletter. They promote awareness of the Museum's activities and individual Friends contribute many hours of volunteer work to the Museum each year.
