About Us

The London Transport Museum Friends is a separate charity in its own right and is not organisationally part of the Museum. The Friends share a similar purpose with the Museum and exist to support its collections and objectives.* Members of the Friends’ management team are all unpaid volunteers, not members of staff. Below is a list of the Friends' organisational structure which shows the roles and responsibilities of each area of the organisation.

* The Friends’ Trust Deed requires the Trustees to act “for the advancement of public education in the history of transport and in particular by assisting and encouraging the work and activities of the Museum…”.

The Friends' Trustees

The Friends’ Trustees are responsible for:

  • The Friends’ constitution
  • The annual accounts, budget and five year plan
  • A financial overview of performance
  • Insurance and indemnities

  • Brian Staines, former Chairman of the Trustees and of the Friends
  • Colin Hamling, Insurance Executive
  • Barry LeJeune, Chairman of the Friends

  • Andrew Scott, former Director, National Railway Museum
  • Peter Stephens, former Director of London Transport Museum.

In addition, the following serve the Trustees as officers and also attend meetings:

The Executive Committtee

The Executive Committee are responsible for:

  • Policy and objectives
  • Organisation and succession
  • Membership and recruitment strategy
  • Finance, including fees and subscriptions
  • Museum sponsorship and financial support
  • Museum interface and major projects
  • Marketing and external relations

The Executive Committee

Appointments to the both the Executive and Operations Committees are made by the Trustees and advised to members at the Annual Members’ Meeting. Members of the Executive Committee are:

  • Barry LeJeune, Chairman
  • Richard Meads, Vice Chairman, responsible for membership strategy
  • Guy Marriott, Secretary to the Friends
  • Chris Angell, Treasurer
  • Paul Hopper, responsible for Project Management
  • John Self, Fund raising
  • Nik Oakley, Marketing and Communications

Museum Director, Sam Mullins, is also a member of the Friends’ Executive Committee ”ex officio”.


The Operations Committee

The Operations Committee are responsible for:

  • Project development
  • Progress of Friends’ funded projects
  • Membership matters
  • Newsletter production
  • Friends’ meetings, visits and other events
  • Acquisitions and disposals
  • Volunteers’ activities
  • Website and IT development

The Operations Committee

  • Richard Meads, Friends’ Vice Chairman who chairs this Committee
  • Paul Hopper, responsible for liaison with the Museum over Friends-funded conservation projects as well as being the Q-stock project manager
  • Dave Taylor, concerned with Museum acquisitions funded by the Friends and sales of material by the Friends, including the Friends’ stall at Acton Depot and e-bay sales
  • Laurie Akehurst, liaises with the Museum over volunteers’ roles
  • Nick Agnew, organises the programme of Friends’ meetings and visits
  • Pat Tilly, Membership Secretary
  • Spencer McManus, takes the lead, on behalf of the Friends, in matters relating to heritage train operation. He is also actively involved in the technical aspects of the Q-stock project
  • Richard Moules, Operations Committee secretary
